About Us

Who We Are

The Canadian Association of Former Parliamentarians (CAFP) is a non-profit corporation established by an Act of Parliament. Its membership is comprised of men and women who have served in either the Senate or House of Commons of Canada. By joining the Association, former parliamentarians make a continuing commitment to strengthening the institutions of democracy and public participation in the political process in Canada and abroad. The Chair of the Association is listed in the Table of Precedence of Canada for state functions.

Membership and Management

Membership in the Association is open to all former Senators and former Members of the House of Commons upon payment of annual dues. A part-time Executive Director and a volunteer, elected Board of Directors representing all regions of the country manage the CAFP with the officers constituting the Executive Committee.

The Speaker of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Commons are Honourary Co-Chairpersons of the Association.

Purposes of the Association

The CAFP places the knowledge and experience of its members at the service of parliamentary democracy in Canada and elsewhere. It serves the public interest by providing non-partisan support for the parliamentary system of government in Canada and fosters good relations between members of the Senate, House of Commons and former parliamentarians. The Association is prohibited from pursuing its objectives for any partisan political purpose.
