Activities of the Association


In fulfillment of its purposes the Association undertakes the following activities:

  • Annual General Meeting held in Ottawa in the precincts of Parliament.
  • Regional meetings held twice yearly in major provincial centers.
  • Memorial Service conducted annually in one of the Houses of Parliament to honour deceased parliamentarians.
  • Distinguished Service Award presented annually to a former parliamentarian who has made an outstanding contribution to the country and its democratic institutions.
  • Beyond the Hill a magazine published quarterly to keep members informed about issues of interest, activities of the Association and its members.
  • Conducting studies on issues of importance to parliamentary democracy, governance and the interests of both current and former parliamentarians.
  • Negotiation of agreements and partnerships with governmental and non-governmental organizations that will have the effect of furthering the contribution the Association and its individual members may make to strengthening democracy and good governance.
  • Maintaining an inventory of members able and willing to contribute their talents in support of democracy and good governance.
  • Relationships with sister associations are established and maintained in Canada and internationally. Occasionally this may involve sending and receiving delegations from other jurisdictions.
  • Information programs for newly elected Members of Parliament and outgoing Members.
  • Educational Foundation established to mount programs in support of democracy.
  • International Election Monitors Institute established to promote democratic elections abroad.
